How to Get to Capri

Capri, situated close to the Bay of Naples and off the coast of Sorrento, is accessible only by water, except for private helicopter transfers. Since there is no airport on the island, the closest airport is Naples-Capodichino International Airport.

If your ultimate destination is Capri, you can take a ferry from Naples Molo Beverello Port for high-speed ferry services, or opt for a private water taxi or boat. Additionally, water ferries and boat services offer the best scenic views of the Amalfi Coast and Capri. Be sure to sit outside to experience the most stunning coastal views.

Ferries from Naples or the Amalfi Coast to Capri

During summers, roughly 20 ferries travel from Naples to Capri via Molo Beverello and Calata Porta di Massa. Ferries start departing from Naples around 7 a.m. and continue until 9:30 p.m. Ferry journeys take 40–50 minutes to depart every day.

High-speed ferries operated by SNAV and NLG depart from Naples’ Molo Beverello port to Capri between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m.

As of 2024, the earliest ferry from Naples to Capri departs at approximately 5:35 a.m. and returns from Capri to Naples at 9:35 p.m.

From Sorrento

Capri is only 20–40 minutes away from Sorrento, depending on the ferry. In the summer months, SNAV, NLG, Alilaura, and Caremar ferries operate from 7:10 a.m. until 7:50 p.m. from Sorrento to Capri.

From Amalfi & Positano

NLG, Alicost, Positano Jet, and Alilaura ferries operate more than 10 trips in the summer months from Amalfi to Capri, each lasting between 50 and 70 minutes. Furthermore, the same ferry operators run approximately 13 excursions from Positano to Capri, with typical trip durations ranging from 21 to 42 minutes and some lasting up to 90 minutes.

From Rome

If visiting Capri is a must for you, traveling from Rome to Capri is quite doable. Specifically,high speed train journeys from Rome to Naples range from 1 hour and 8 minutes to 1 hour and 15 minutes. The earliest high-speed train departs from Rome Termini Station around 6 a.m. By taking the early morning high-speed train, you can catch the early morning ferry from Naples Molo Beverello Port to Capri Marina Grande Port.

Where to Buy Ferry Tickets?

During the summer months of June–August, there are typically more than eight ferries operating between Naples and Capri. It’s a very busy season, and certain ferry tickets can sell out fast. Therefore, purchase your tickets in advance. 

In addition to buying your ferry tickets, be prepared to get to the designated port for your ferry at least 20 minutes before your departure time.

You can buy your ferry tickets via Omio, Ferry Hoppers, or Direct Ferries online platforms or applications.

Where to Pick Up Tickets?

Some online applications send your online ferry tickets directly to your phone. However, some of them send purchased ticket details to pick up at ferry companies’ kiosks in designated ports.

Private Water Taxi & Boats

Furthermore, there are private water taxi and boat options from Naples, Sorrento, and the Amalfi coast to Capri. However, they are more expensive than high-speed ferry options.
In addition to ferries, private boats and water taxi services are available from Naples and the Amalfi Coast region to Capri.

How to Spend a Day in Capri

Although Capri is a small island, it offers plenty of attractions and activities to keep you busy for more than a day. If you only have one day to spend in Capri, here are some top activities to consider for your trip.

Take the Funicular to Capri Town

You can purchase funicular tickets on the opposite side of the funicular location, on the left side of the port pier, where ferries and bus tickets are available for sale. In 2024, a one-way funicular trip fare costs € 2.40.

The funicular operates every day starting 6:25 am to 10:45 pm between Marina Grande to Capri Piazzeta, Capri town center. Not only offers the best views of Capri but also takes only a few minutes ride to reach the town center.

Enjoy the views of Capri when you reach to the Capri Piazzetta stop, and don’t forget to spend some time admiring the breathtaking views from the funicular stop area.

Stroll around Capri Town

Stroll around Capri Piazzeta, also known as Piazza Umberto I, and explore Capri’s one of the most famous streets, Via Camarelle, nestled with high-end luxury brand stores such as Hermes, Saint Laurent, Bvlgari, and Chanel.

Via Krupp

Friedrich Alfred Krupp built Via Krupp in the early 20th century to connect Capri town with Marina Piccola. Notably, the pathway features a series of pedestrian paths paved into the rock. Additionally, you can purchase the entrance ticket at the same ticket machine located near Augustus Garden

As of 2024, Via Krupp is open to visitors. The pathway was closed for several years due to the rockfalls. If you have time and endurance, take the advantage of the open pathway to experience some of the best views of Capri’s coastal area and blue hues of water.

The hike from the top is downhill and less challenging. However, the pathway ends in Marina Piccola, roughly 4 miles away. Conversely, the pathway from Marina Piccola to the top is more arduous and difficult. If you prefer not to walk back to the top, you can take a bus or taxi back to Capri town.
